She is visiting the bar again, the sharply dressed woman with the angular face and the wide eyes.

Currently, she is simply sitting at one of the centrally-located tables, sipping her coffee, and listening to the buzz of bar room conversation around her.

It seems some fascinating things have been going on, lately.

[personal profile] quick_clean_pure posting in [community profile] milliways_bar
This really wasn't a great day to get chased by the cops.

Not that any day was a great day for it, but still.

Graverobber hustled through a long string of alleyways with a sense of urgency and annoyance. Really, he'd done pretty well this week, his pockets filled with a decent amount of change. If he'd been smart, he would have rested on his laurels, had a good night out with some satisfied customers. Going back to the cemetery for one last supply haul had been a little greedy, come to think of it.

And, naturally, he'd made it about ten feet into the graveyard before a GeneCo SWAT team descended and he was sprinting back the way he'd came.

He could hear the sound of boots getting closer than he'd like, even if he knew his way around the back alleys better than most rent-a-cops. Graverobber was getting closer to his own normal haunts, and he really didn't want police swarming his usual set of dumpsters and trashcan-fire campgrounds. In a split-second decision, he tried an unfamiliar door and lucked out to find it open. He ducked inside and slammed it shut behind him, figuring he could find a place to hide in whatever warehouse/machinery/abandoned hellhole he'd just broken into.

And then he looked and saw....a bar?

Not even a shitty dive bar like he might have anticipated finding, a nice bar. Since when did his area of town have one of those?

Stranger still, he couldn't hear any boots behind the entrance he'd came in, or the sound of anyone running past. Weird.

The more he looked, the more he got the vibe that he'd stumbled on something more out-of-the-normal than he could have reasonably expected. If nothing else, the spectacular view of the stars was something he'd never seen before, not in the light-polluted shitscape he'd known his whole life.

But, more important matters had to be focused on: he should probably act like he was supposed to be there, right? Or at least not act like someone who was kind-of, sort-of, absolutely a wanted criminal fleeing the law. Probably also not like someone who had a dozen vials of grade-A painkillers jangling around the inside of his coat.

So, for the moment, he just sidled up to the bar top like he'd just happened to wander in completely on purpose. If the bartender asked, he'd order a cheap beer and act casual until he knew where the hell he was and whether the cops were about to barge in.

Thorn is enjoying her first night in the Bar. It's late, which is why she's around, and she wants to see what all the fuss is about without having been triggered into it.

She's currently sprawled out on a couch on her stomach, knees bent and her feet entwined. There's a coke with a straw nearby that she's nursing and a generic teen magazine she's flipping through, mostly making faces at the various articles and photos.

If all this is normal, she's not for it.

It’s early in the morning when the door opens and someone on the other side whistles sharply. Buster trots over to see who it is, wags his tail happily, and disappears through to the other side.

On the other side of the universe, in a house in the Vinewood Hills, there’s a brief power struggle over home-ownership.

Later in the evening, the door opens, and Buster races back into the bar with his ears down and his tail tucked firmly between his legs. Not far behind him is Wilford, in his pyjamas and holding a wooden spoon and a giant wok, looking equally rattled. It takes them both a few seconds to realise where they are, at which point they head straight for the fire to form a new plan of attack. Because the first one went so well.

[ooc: Wilford is just a few months out from the point where he originally entered the bar. This is the ‘older’ version of Wilford, for anybody who may still be under the impression that there were two versions of him.]

With the fish back where they belong, mostly, things have returned to normal in Milliways.

(For certain values of normal anyway).

The door opens. A soft light filters through. A little while passes.

Then someone calls from the other side of the door.
"Maze? Maze? Why have you left - Oh, I'll just go and shut it myself, shall I?"

There's some good natured grumbling atop the rap of footsteps and then a man pokes his head through the door.
"Well, I'll be damned," he says, looking first with puzzlement and then growing delight at the sight before him.

He turns his head. "Maze. There's a portal in my bedroom closet. Did you put it there?"

And then he impulsively steps through without waiting for an answer.

Wearing an expensive, tailored suit, handsewn shoes, and an amused smile he saunteres up to the Bar, and raps the surface with a knuckle.

Someone might want to fill in the devilishly handsome fellow?

[personal profile] iprotectyou posting in [community profile] milliways_bar
After the translation magic seems to have reestablished itself, Baze has settled his armored bulk on a barstool, leaning his staff against the counter. An empty plate with a smear of guacamole rests by his right elbow--the remains of a steak fajita with grilled onions and bell peppers.

He's intending to write a note today, but because he reads slow and writes even slower--and the fact that paper was painfully precious on Jedha--there have been plenty of false starts. He learned how to write from transcribing texts as punishment in the temple when he was a small child, and always resented the act of writing. Using a datapad to type in the Aurebesh characters is much easier, and while he's tempted to just use one of those, paper is a more personal touch.

So he writes, his unhurried scrawl painstaking and careful, each stroke precise and exact.

X )

Note finished and delivered, he drinks his surprise tea--Chocolate Mint Peach, mmm--and swings his feet, waiting for a response.

There are... suddenly quite a lot of unintelligible languages in here.

Not that a universal translator, or for that matter the still-inexplicable, presumed translation field working on the bar and grounds, make this fact inaudible, but a certain amount of bleedthrough or confusion is one thing. This... seems to be entirely another.

Doesn't it just figure that today is the day Sariel both finds a working door in her quarters and leaves her communicator (and its embedded universal translator) behind when dimension-hopping? What? She was drying her hair, and the bar ambushed her on the way out of the bathroom.

Cue one thoroughly bewildered, bemused Starfleet ensign in civilian clothes standing at Bar, trying to pick familiar words out of the general - please forgive this one - Babel. Babble. Bunch of people talking. You know. Her tea's cooling, but hasn't yet gone cold.

((OOC: I had to get in on this before it ended. Sariel is fluent in English and Kweyol, Saint Lucia's French patois. the latter is if not mutually intelligible with, then at least reasonably intelligible with, other French Creole languages, though if someone speaks European or, say, Moroccan French or Quebecois, they'll likely have a harder time. The mun's got English and Spanish, so I'm not even going to try and do justice to Kweyol itself, but I'll indicate when/if there's a switch to it.))

"Well, if you can send that to me today, I should be able to get some notes back to you by lunchtime tomorrow..."

A ruffled black head pokes around the door.

Sam ambles in, still wearing his usual scruffy black, and carefully shuts the door on the university behind him.

"This is - huh. This is definitely weird."

Not just because he hasn't found a door in a long time, but also because he's just realised he can't understand a lot of the chatter going on - and he hasn't been somewhere he can't speak the language in millennia.

He finds his old favourite spot at the bar to perch on, surveying the room, and lets the flow of languages wash around him as he hunts for a) his girlfriend, b) his best friend, and c) his cat.

Even if you aren't one of the above, you're welcome to come say hi.

[OOC: Sam speaks basically every language in Earth, Heaven and Hell. Please let me know if your pup's language sounds like or shares words with any of those.]

Barry is parked at the end of the counter on a stool with his chin in his hand and an elbow resting on the wood bartop. Sitting in a slouch that's kind of favoring one side, his head is down and he's swiping through and reading news stories on his tablet.

One is about a failed armored car heist, another is about an apartment building fire. There are others about car chases, and interrupted robberies, small crimes and one or two large. Most of them are just normal news articles, facts and accounts, but a few mention a mysterious 'Red Streak'.

Barry flips through them at a sluggish pace, a quiet frown on.

He's not really looking for company right now, but unbeknownst to him when he asks Bar for a cup of coffee she produces two, one in front of him, and one sitting as an open invitation in the empty spot next to him.

A beat later and a pair of sugar cookies frosted like jack o' lanterns appear on small plates next to each cup.

[ooc: the translation field can be working or not in this post, as you chose! :D Barry and I can play it either way. Well, that was interesting, in a boring way. It's been a few days now of sitting on his skiff over the lake--over a writhing mass of magically-summoned fish and not-really-fish-at-all--but now the spell seems to be starting to wear off. The water below looks calmer, Loki hasn't had to throw any lampreys back into the water in a few hours, and the crowd of hungry shrieking seagulls that arrived on the second day is starting to thin out.

And the squid seem to have lost interest.

Which is nice. Because they've been grabbing his skiff every time he's tried to fly away from the situation, but now he's able to steer for shore, hop down to land, and make his way to the bar. (Because he's not a complete asshole (well he is, but whatever), Loki leaves the skiff far enough out over the water that the obsessed fish aren't flinging themselves onto the land trying to reach it.)

So....hey Milliways, WHAT'S UP? Can a slightly damp guy get a drink?

((It's been a week and the translation failure is wrapping up! It's been ridiculously fun to see all the threads coming out of this, I've loved it. Let's say tomorrow is the last day for new translation EPs, but obviously people can keep on with older EPs as long as they want.

Let's also say that the babel fish are starting to return to their normal ways, so there are more and more areas where the translation field works properly. But still some problems if you want!

And Loki still has Marvel-woo Allspeak going on, so the translation problem isn't a problem for him.))

Cassian's finding the translation not working strange but not as bad as he expected. It makes Milliways feel more like the cantinas he's used to where most people speak Basic but not everyone and not all the time. Also it gives him a chance to speak Festian which he truly enjoys.

At the counter he gets a napkin from Bar and moves behind to figure out how to run a Happy Hour where no one can read the specials. He starts by writing them in Galactic Basic with the Aurabesh alphabet.

Then realizes not everyone will be able to read them and draws a bottle for ale, then a glass for whiskey and a mug with steam coming off of it for caf and hot chocolate. Once it looks like it will work, he finds a nice Alderaan ale to drink and watches and listens to the Bar.

OOC: Cassian speaks Galactic Basic which resembles English but isn't and Festian which is like Spanish but isn't. Let me know how much translation fail you'd like in the thread, I can do everything from understanding almost everything to needing charades.

Wilford needs to look at something that isn't a book written for a thirteen-year-old. He also needs to get something to eat before he collapses. Unfortunately, this means coming downstairs for a little while.

He could go home, but... no. He's not sure which is worse - staying here, or going back there, but he knows he's less likely to do something stupid here. Less likely to potentially ruin everything he's worked for.

Not that any of it really matters, in the grand scheme of things. Maybe he can go do whatever he wants, and things will still turn out, just as they're supposed to. Or maybe everything's already gone to hell, and this is the end result.

Trying not to think about any of this, and completely failing, Wilford makes his way over to the fireplace with a rice bowl and a fresh bottle of whiskey. And a new pack of cigarettes. If anybody wants to shout at him for smoking inside, they can get shouted at right back.

[ooc: Wilford is not currently experiencing any translation-based failures.]

Varric got some requests from his publisher today. He's extremely suspicious of a few of her claims, but there's not much he can do about his supposedly awful Orlesian sales numbers just at the moment. It'll take him a while to get something written that suits their tastes. Maybe an awful romance serial? Something with a redheaded guard captain?

.... wait, it doesn't smell like the Hanged Man ...

"[Huh. Thought this place and me were on the outs,]" he says, and then pauses. "[Wait a second. When did they get this many different languages in here?]"
